Holidays are funny things, they keep on coming at you whether you realize it or not. People don’t really become aware of the countdown until it is almost upon them. At The Countdown Center we’re a little different, if you want to know how many days it is to next Thanksgiving you can find out right now, or any time you have a fancy. We leave each holiday up year around and we hope over time, both to add more holidays and to come up with more information, history and ideas about each one. Thanks for coming by!
Holidays come in many forms, some are religious, some are secular, some used to be religious, but now have their religious significance for most people. In some cases there is a curious blend, Christmas is still a religious holiday for many people, but a lot of people observe the celebrations and gift giving who are not particularly religious at all, or whose expression of spirituality is not Christian. Thanksgiving is an official holiday with a strong religious background as opposed to more patriotic holidays like the Fourth of July here in the U.S. Halloween and Valentine’s day are examples of holidays that have roots in religion, but have become almost completely secularized. I’m still debating with myself whether or not to have a countdown to Hanukah for example, is it too religious, will some Jews be offended if I leave it out and some if I leave it in? Down the road I might take a poll, but this year at least there will be no countdown to Hanukah, but shortly pages will be appearing for more holidays in 2008, so happy New Year and beyond.
